The 6AW8A is a high μ triode and a sharp cut-off pentode. The design use was as a sync separator and video amplifier. The electrically identical 8AW8A has an 8.4 Volt 0.45 Amp heater.
The RCA data_sheet describes the 6AW8A thus: 'miniature type used in television receiver applications. The pentode unit is used as an IF amplifier, video amplifier, AGC amplifier or reactance valve. The triode unit is used in low-frequency oscillator, sync-separator, sync-clipper, and phase-splitter circuits'.
Here the three wire grids can be seen. The open pitch of the suppressor grid contrasts with the fine pitch of the control grid. Both inner grids are wound on copper supports for good thermal conductivity.
The Tektronix label. Tektronix being the premier maker of oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers and associated electronic test equipment.
The GE branding partly covered by the label.
The thin glass tube envelope is 21 mm in diameter, and excluding the base pins is 59 mm tall.
Reference: Data-sheet. Type 6AW8A was first introduced in 1956. See also 1956 adverts.
