The M55HG is a current stabiliser or barretter. The M55HG was designed for use on 110 Volt mains in America.
Iron wire in a hydrogen atmosphere is the construction. The characteristic of iron wire is that it has a positive temperature coefficient and so as the current rises so does the resistance and that counteracts the current rise.
The classic envelope is 36 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 90 mm tall.
Reference: 3002. Type M55HG was first introduced in 1937. See also 1937 adverts.
