The CV980 is a protective gas-filled spark-gap designed to break down at 120 Volts. The function is as a lighting arrestor.

The V probably identifies the maker as Cossor (pre Sept 1945 or if later Gilbert Photoelectrics).

The domed electrodes and defined distance gap.

The thin glass tube envelope is 14 mm in diameter and, excluding the base connections, is 60 mm tall.
