Ferranti Ltd. was established in 1892 by Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti and took the founders name as the company name in 1905. The Ferranti organisation is/was involved in a wide range of electronic manufacture.

In the early 1930s Ferranti Ltd entered the radio set business, the valve manufacturing operations commenced in 1933 with a factory in Hollingwood, Lancashire. Other factories followed in later years.
One of the first types of valves the company made was a heptode frequency changer (pentagrid converter) - the heptode had not been made in the UK before.
