Metropolitan Vickers Co. Ltd entered the valve business in 1917 during WWI to make the R Type valve. Initially production was based at their Trafford Road plant in Manchester. Metropolitan Vickers also acquired a lamp plant at Brimsdown (Enfield), London in 1917 when the factory was sequestrated by the Government from the previous German owners.

The Short Path valve design originated at the Trafford Road works and was sold under the Cosmos name. Also in 1925 all valve making was transferred to the Brimsdown plant and that was renamed the Cosmos Lamp Works. From a start in 1925, the Cosmos Lamp Works was engaged in high volume production within two years.

After the formation of AEI in 1928, Cosmos ceased trading and valve making was undertaken for the group by Edison Swan.
