In 1897 Otto Pressler founded the glass blowing company (precision glass blowing) 'Otto Pressler, Thuringian Vacuum Tube Factory and Factory of Scientific Apparatus' in Cursdorf in 1897 with his brother Rudolf, who soon left and in 1903 founded his own company (back in Cursdorf). Otto Pressler is later mainly known for photocells, glow lamps and voltage regulating tubes. Later called DGL, Deutsche Glimmlampenfabrik Leipzig and after the war 'VEB Electronic Special Tubes Leipzig' (ESR). The brothers Max and Hermann stay with Otto Pressler and around 1947 Gerhard Pressler, a son of Max, takes over the management.

In 1943 the factory was completely destroyed by a bombing. Dr. Gerhard Pressler moved with the remains to Cursdorf in January 1944 to get production going again. The mechanics are installed at the Langbein company (later VEB NARVA). In 1945 the company came back into the register as 'Deutsche Glimmlampen Gesellschaft Leipzig'. Later it was named 'VEB Electronic Special Tubes Leipzig' (ESR). The VEB was e.g. responsible for the Gerberchen test tubes, so that the milk testing equipment factory in Ilmenau was added to the VEB Electronic Special Tubes (ESR).
