The valve protection is an inner card retainer. This retainer allows the valve to be tested before removing the valve. This was common in the 1940s but unusual with miniature valves. Crossley were after market resellers and the box declares the contents to have been made by RCA. The box is 26 mm square and 73 mm tall.
