The GD86W/S is a voltage reference tube designed to operate at a fixed current of 0.5 mA where it has a voltage stability of 86 ± 1.5 Volts. The minimum striking voltage is 125 Volts.
The use would be in a stabilised power supply, probably with a difference amplifier and series pass valve supplying current to the controlled circuit.
The evacuation pip on the side. The electrodes are obscured but there is a diagram of the structure in the data-sheet.
The thin glass tube envelope is 16 mm in diameter and, excluding the wires, is 37 mm tall.
Reference: Data-sheet. Type GD86W/S was first introduced in 1954. See also 1954 adverts.
