The CV9423 is an X-Band reflex klystron oscillator integrated with waveguide 16 and fitted with a square WG16 flange. Connections are by flying leads and the output is 40 mW. The design use was for airborne radar - probably as the local oscillator of the receiver. However, 40 mW at X-Band would be useful for short range radar or point to point communication.
The KB/Q identifies this valve as being made to specification K1001 or K1006, the B denotes qualification by a UK authority and the Q identifies the maker as English Electric Valve Co., Chelmsford.
Left to right: WG16 flange, tuning screw, matching screw and klystron.
The WG16 flange is 41 mm square. The tuning screw thread is just visible behind the front matching screw thread.
The top of the front matching thread can be seen emerging from the flange. The tuning screw is split to provide a friction fit and reduce backlash or wobble. Any mechanical movement of the tuning thread will significantly alter the operating frequency.
The flying leads with the reflector on the left and the heater and cathode on the right together with the connection to the resonator cavity.
The thin metal tube envelope is 16 mm in diameter and, edge to edge, is 53 mm tall.
