The CV980 is a protective gas-filled spark-gap designed to break down at 120 Volts. The function is as a lighting arrestor.

The KB/V identifies this valve as being made to specification K1001 or K1006, the B denotes qualification by a UK authority and the V identifies the maker as Cossor, Highbury, pre Sept 1945. The data-sheet is issue three dated 1954. The expectation is that this design was specified before 1945, however, if made later the V designates the maker as Gilbert Photoelectrics.

In this exhibit the internal coating hides the electrodes. See CV980 for the internal view.

The thin glass tube envelope is 14 mm in diameter and, excluding the base connections, is 61 mm tall.
