The 12AX4 is a television efficiency diode that was used to return the flyback energy of the collapsing line field coils to the HT capacitors.
The family consisted of: 6AX4GT - 6.3 Volt heater, 12AX4GT - 12.6 Volt 600 mA heater and the 12AX4GTA with a controlled warm-up time of 11 seconds.

The heater/cathode insulation is increased by having this insulated wire helix between the cathode tube and the central heater wire.
At the base the secondary helix can be seen surrounding the multi strand heater.
The wide glass tube envelope is 28 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 69 mm tall.
References: Data-sheet. Type 12AX4GT was first introduced in 1955. See also 1955 adverts.
