20th Century Electronics (changed to Centronic in 1978) was founded in 1945 and became a limited company in 1949. Initially they manufactured specialist valves such as cathode-ray tubes and Geiger-Muller tubes.

A purpose built factory in Croydon opened in 1953 that included a 50 foot tower to house a distillation column to separate Boron isotopes for the production of Boron Fluride neutron detectors. This facility was a world first commercial source of Boron-10.

By 1957 production of photoelectric devices and glass photomultiplier tubes was coupled with the production of ionisation chambers for the measurement of radiation in nuclear reactors.
