The VT-162 (USA Government code) is also the commercial 12SJ7 amplifier pentode. It is the 12.6 Volt heater version of the 6SJ7. It is a steel envelope valve that was developed in the mid 1930s, the S in the Type designation tells us that it is a single ended valve ie no top cap whereas the VT-91 has the top cap.
Original design purpose was as a detector but good linear characteristics made it well suited to audio voltage amplification.
The thin metal tube envelope is 24 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 50 mm tall.
References: Data-sheet, 1040 & 1043. Type VT-162 was first introduced in 1939. See also 1939 adverts.
