The VW48 is version of the Mazda 215SG for the RAF. It is a screen grid valve or tetrode. It was designed for RF amplification in radio receivers. The screen provides isolation between the grid and anode circuits and enables greater individual stage gains to be achieved without instability.
The AM and crown denoting the UK Air Ministry. The label on the base cap identifies this as a 215SG.
The balloon envelope is 44 mm in diameter, and excluding the B4 base pins is 111 mm tall.
