The 6J5 triode electrode assembly is formed on a 17 mm diameter pressed glass foot. As an American manufactured product this equates to a 1 inch outer diameter tube and 2 inches tall.
The same technique of hard glass base was used for all glass miniature valves. In the case of metal valves the glass base is bonded to a metal tube envelope. The evacuation of the envelope is made through the base. The IO or International Octal base was introduced by RCA for the metal valves in 1935.
The thin metal tube envelope is 25 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 50 mm tall.
