The EB4 is a pair of signal diodes in a single envelope. Each section is internally screened. The EB34 from 1941 is almost identical but has slightly higher inter-electrode capacitances. The EB4 was designed for signal detection.
The stamp on the back is a BBC test indication.
The balloon envelope is 31 mm in diameter and, excluding the Ct8 base pins, is 60 mm tall.
References: Data-sheet, 3002 & 1040. Type EB4 was first introduced in 1936. See also 1936 adverts.
