The X61M triode hexode valve was purpose designed as a radio frequency changer.
The input signal would be coupled to the frequency changer via the top cap connection to grid 1. The 6K8 is an equivalent and the data for it shows the top cap connected to g3. In both cases the input signal is connected to the top cap irrespective of the internal construction. This valve has separate triode and hexode sections, whereas the 6K8 employs a clever arrangement of grids.
This exhibit arrived with most of the external metal loaded paint breaking away. The rest was removed so that the internal construction would be revealed.
The build above the pinch is divided into two sections by the three mica sheets. The lower section is the local oscillator triode and the mixer is above. The signal from the top cap is directed to grid 1 of the mixer. Grids 2 and 4 are screen grids. Grid three has the supports extended downwards and a tape connects one support to the triode grid for oscillator injection.
The triode anode is an open box and the grid axis is normal to the mixer.
The wide glass tube envelope is 29 mm in diameter and excluding the IO base pins, is 86 mm tall.
