The L63 is an Octal based general purpose amplifier triode from M-OV - here with the Osram brand label. It features the then (1938) new standard 6.3 Volt heater, previously the UK standard heater for mains valves was 4.0 V at 1.0 Amp. This heater design consumed lower power and was insulated with alumina. 6.3 Volts is the charging voltage of a lead/acid vehicle battery making portable equipment easily supplied. The base/glass cement has clearly become faulty and at one time an adhesive tape was used to hold the parts together.
The Osram brand in an elliptical label. The classic envelope is 38 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 85 mm tall.References: Private communication, data-sheet & 1043. Type L63 was first introduced in 1938. See also 1938 adverts. |
